Today’s Verse
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Isaiah 26:3
When the Soul Is Settled
“It is well with my soul” are perhaps some of the most profound words ever written, especially when you know the story behind them. Horatio Spafford penned those lyrics while sailing over the spot where his four daughters had drowned in a shipwreck. His business had been destroyed. His son had died. His life was in ruins. And in the middle of unfathomable grief, he wrote: “When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll. whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.”
This isn’t denial. It’s not pretending everything is fine when it’s not. It’s something deeper, a settled confidence that transcends circumstances. It’s the ability to say, “My life is falling apart, but my soul is secure. Everything around me is chaos, but deep within, where God dwells, there is peace.”
This is the kind of wellness Jesus offers. Not the absence of storms, but peace in the middle of them. Not freedom from pain, but the presence of God carrying you through it. Not circumstances that always work out, but a soul anchored to something, Someone, who cannot be shaken.
The world measures wellness by what’s happening around you. God measures it by what’s happening within you. And when your soul is rooted in Him, held by His promises, sustained by His presence, it can be well even when nothing else is.
Today, whatever storm you’re facing, speak this truth over yourself: it is well with my soul. Not because everything is fine, but because God is faithful. And that is enough.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, it is well with my soul, not because my circumstances are perfect but because You are my peace regardless of what surrounds me.
This world brings storms, losses, disappointments, and pain that could easily overwhelm me, but deep within, where You dwell, there is stillness.
Teach me to speak peace over my soul even when everything feels chaotic, to declare wellness not based on feelings but on the foundation of Your unchanging presence.
When trials come, when grief strikes, when uncertainty looms, I can still say it is well because my soul is anchored in something more stable than my circumstances.
Help me distinguish between the turbulence at the surface and the peace in the depths, to access the calm that comes from knowing You hold me no matter what I face.
Remind me that wellness of soul isn’t the absence of trouble but the presence of trust, not freedom from pain but faith that carries me through it.
Give me the grace to sing this declaration even through tears, to proclaim wellness when everything feels broken, to testify that You are enough when everything else crumbles.
Let it be well with my soul today, tomorrow, and always, grounded not in my strength or my situation but in the One who keeps my soul secure through every storm.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
