Devotional

My God Is Bigger Than My Loneliness

Yesterday I wrote about friendships that faded, promises broken, people who said they'd always be there but weren't. And it resonated with a lot of you. I had a number of messages saying you related - the friendships that just stopped, the people who drifted away, the connections that didn't survive distance or time or life getting busy.

The result, in a lot of cases, is loneliness.

It's not just about being alone, it's about being let down. When friendships fail, when people drift away, something hardens inside you. It becomes easier to isolate than to risk again. Safer to keep people at arm's length than to trust and get hurt.

Loneliness aches in ways that are hard to explain. A feeling of being unseen, unknown, disconnected even in crowds. It whispers that no one truly knows you. That you're forgotten.

But my God is bigger than my loneliness.

This morning, as we approach Easter, I've been thinking about how deeply Jesus understands loneliness. In His final hours, everyone abandoned Him.

Judas betrayed Him. Peter denied knowing Him three times. The disciples who swore they'd never leave scattered when the soldiers came. On the cross, He cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Jesus knows what it feels like to be utterly alone. He's not distant from this pain. He's intimately familiar with it.

That doesn't minimize what you're feeling. Loneliness is real and it hurts. But God's presence fills what feels empty. He sees you constantly, knows you completely. Even when human connection feels absent, He's with you.

Psalm 68:6 says, "God sets the lonely in families." He doesn't leave us isolated. He brings connection, community, belonging. God sees loneliness and moves toward it.

If you're lonely today - whether from friendships lost, a loved one passing away, or simply feeling unseen - God is with you. He knows the ache. And He's closer than the emptiness suggests.

You're not alone. Even when it feels like you are.

Prayer

My God is bigger than my loneliness, more present than my isolation, closer than the emptiness that makes me feel like I'm completely alone in the world.

Loneliness aches in ways that are hard to explain, a feeling of being unseen, unknown, disconnected even in crowds, and it makes me question if anyone truly knows or cares.

Teach me that my God being bigger than my loneliness doesn't minimize the pain but promises that I'm not as alone as I feel, that Your presence fills what feels empty.

Loneliness tells me I'm forgotten, overlooked, that no one would notice if I disappeared, but You see me constantly, know me completely, think about me continually.

Help me recognize Your presence in the loneliness, to know that even when human connection feels absent, You're with me, that solitude with You isn't the same as being alone.

Remind me that You understand loneliness, that Jesus experienced rejection, isolation, being misunderstood, that You're not distant from this pain but intimately familiar with it.

Give me comfort that comes from Your nearness, community with other believers when isolation feels crushing, and peace knowing that my God is bigger than the loneliness trying to convince me I'm abandoned.

Let me experience today that my God is bigger than my loneliness, feeling Your presence in the empty spaces, knowing I'm seen, known, and loved even when I feel alone.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
