“Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.” – Colossians 3:13

Colossians 3:13 calls believers to a profound practice: “Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.” This verse is not just a suggestion, but a powerful directive that shapes our relationships and reflects the very heart of God.

Forgiveness, at its core, is a release. It’s letting go of the right to hold a grievance, to harbor resentment, or to seek retribution. This isn’t about excusing hurtful behavior, but about choosing freedom for ourselves and offering grace to others. The instruction “even as Christ forgave you” sets a high standard, yet it is also a source of immense encouragement. Christ’s forgiveness towards us was complete, undeserved, and transformative. He bore the ultimate complaint against humanity on the cross, yet His response was love and redemption.

Living out this kind of forgiveness in our daily lives requires intentionality and a deep reliance on God’s Spirit. It means actively choosing to extend grace when we feel wronged, to seek understanding rather than perpetuate conflict, and to release those who have offended us from the burden of our anger. This process is rarely easy, especially when the hurt is deep.

However, holding onto bitterness only traps us in a cycle of pain, while choosing to forgive, even incrementally, opens the door to healing and restoration, both within ourselves and in our communities. When we forgive, we participate in the liberating work of Christ, bringing His peace into our own lives and into the lives of those around us. Let the truth of Christ’s boundless forgiveness empower you to release and to heal today.

Prayer for the day: Lord, help me to embody Your forgiveness in every interaction, letting go of grievances just as You have graciously released mine. Guide my steps and my words to reflect Your patient love throughout this day. Amen.
