You Can't See the Wind
As we were reading stories at bedtime the other night, Theo asked: "Why can't we see God?"
Scrambling to think about how to explain it to a four-year-old, I landed on comparing Him to the wind.
You can't see wind, I told him. But you can see what it does.
It blows the leaves in the trees. It pushes a swing nobody's touched. You can feel it on your skin even with your eyes closed.
You know it's there, not because you saw it, but because you saw what it moved.
He nodded like that settled it, or settled it enough for a four-year-old at bedtime, and went back to our story.
A few minutes later, when we said our prayers, just the two of us, I found myself finishing what I hadn't fully explained.
I told him God wasn't only out there somewhere, blowing leaves around. He was right there in the room with us, right then, listening to every word we prayed.
Theo looked around trying to see Him, trying to verify for himself what I'd said. I could tell it didn't fully land, not really. Most days it doesn't fully land for me either!
But he didn't need to get it. It was true whether either of us grasped it or not. Right then, just the two of us with our eyes closed, God was there, hearing every word.
That's what Jesus meant in Matthew 18:20 when He said, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them."
He didn't say you'd see Him. He said He'd be there. Present in a way you feel more than you see, the moment you and someone else actually stop and pray, not just talk about praying.
You might be carrying something today you'd love God to answer with something you can see. A clear sign. A door swinging open so obviously you don't have to wonder.
That's not usually how He works. But that doesn't mean He isn't there. Listening intently.
Pray it out loud with someone today, together, and trust that even where you can't see anything move, He's in the room.
You don't have to see Him to know He's there. You just have to trust He's listening.

Prayer
Lord, where two or three are gathered in Your name, You are there in the midst of them, present in a special way when Your people come together.
This promise means gathering with other believers isn't just social or routine but sacred, that when we meet in Your name, You show up, joining us in our midst.
Teach me to value gathering with others, to prioritize community with fellow believers, knowing that when we come together You're present in ways I don't experience alone.
Two or three means it doesn't take a crowd or a cathedral, that even small gatherings matter to You, that intimacy with You happens in humble meetings, not just large assemblies.
Help me recognize Your presence when I gather with others in Your name, to expect You to be there, to look for how You're working in our midst.
Remind me that gathering together isn't optional or something I do when convenient but essential, that I need what happens when believers come together with You in the midst.
Give me hunger for community with other believers, appreciation for the presence You bring when we gather, and faithfulness to show up knowing You will too.
Let me experience today that where two or three are gathered in Your name, You are in the midst of us, present, active, meeting us when we come together.
