Hebrews 6:19·WEB Translation
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil.

An Anchor When Everything Shifts
I've had to start avoiding the news again. I know I've probably said that before, but it's true this week. Every time I open my phone, something else is on fire somewhere, prices are creeping up, and there's another headline that makes me worry.
It's a balancing act because I want to stay educated and up to date on world events, but at the moment, it's coming at the expense of my mental health.
If you're feeling the same, I just want you to know you're not alone. There are mornings lately when the world feels louder than God. You haven't even put your feet on the floor and already the headlines are heavy. Prices keep climbing. Conflict spreading. The ground under everything feels less steady than it did a few months ago, and you start wondering how much more uncertainty a heart is supposed to hold.
But my hope can't depend on the headlines. If it does, I'm in trouble, because the headlines are never going to settle down. There will always be another crisis, and God never asked us to anchor our hope to things that move like that.
Thankfully, the hope God offers is different. It's not optimism, and it's not denial. It's not pretending things are fine when they're not. It's something heavier and quieter than that. It's an anchor. It doesn't stop the waves, but it keeps you from being swept away by them.
I've been remembering that old hymn, We Have an Anchor which has the chorus:
We have an anchor that keeps the soul
steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love.
I love the line fastened to the Rock which cannot move. That's the whole thing right there. The waves can do whatever they want, the news can keep churning, prices can keep climbing, but the Rock doesn't move. He never has. And because the anchor is fastened to Him, neither will we.
So when I pray "Lord, renew my hope again," I'm not asking Him to fix the headlines. I'm asking Him to remind me where the anchor is tied. To pull me, gently, back toward the One who hasn't moved an inch through any of this.
He will. He always does.
Prayer
Lord, renew my hope again, restore what's been depleted, refresh what's grown stale, revive what feels dead inside me after too much disappointment and waiting.
My hope feels worn out, used up, exhausted from too many unfulfilled expectations, too many prayers that seem unanswered, too many times believing things would change and they didn't.
Teach me that renewable hope is possible, that what's been lost can be found again, that You specialize in taking depleted hope and making it fresh, vibrant, alive once more.
I need hope renewed not because I've never had it but because I had it and lost it somewhere along the way, buried under disappointment, crushed by circumstances, drained by waiting too long.
Help me open myself to receive renewed hope instead of protecting myself from more disappointment, to risk hoping again even after hope has let me down before.
Remind me that You're the God of fresh starts, new mercies, renewed strength, that what feels permanently lost in me can be restored by the One who makes all things new.
Give me courage to hope again when past hope led to heartbreak, faith to believe again when believing before brought pain, trust that this time hope won't be wasted.
Let my hope be renewed today, feeling it rise again in places where it died, experiencing fresh expectation where there's been only resignation, alive with possibility again.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
