Put on the Whole Armor of God

When I hear the term spiritual warfare, I often will think of something dramatic like exorcisms, demonic attacks, the kind of thing you see in movies. But actually the battle is far more subtle than that. It's the small compromises. The thoughts that sound like my own voice but aren't. The discouragement that comes out of nowhere. The tricks designed to make me let my guard down.

The enemy doesn't usually announce himself. He whispers lies that sound reasonable. He plants doubts that feel logical. He uses isolation, division, discouragement, comparison, distraction, things I can easily dismiss as just having a bad day or being stressed. But that's exactly the point. If he can keep me from recognizing the battle, he doesn't have to fight very hard to win.

Paul knew this. He told the Ephesians to put on the whole armor of God, not some of it, not the pieces that seem most important, but all of it. Because the enemy is strategic. He looks for weak spots, unprotected areas, places where I've left myself vulnerable.

This armor isn't optional equipment for intense battles. It's daily necessity. The belt of truth when lies feel convincing. The breastplate of righteousness when guilt wants to paralyze me. The shoes of peace when anxiety wants to control me. The shield of faith when doubt whispers. The helmet of salvation when my identity feels shaky. The sword of the Spirit when I need to fight back with God's Word.

So how do we actually put this spiritual armor on? Well, I think it starts with intentionality. Before my day begins, I ground myself in truth, reading Scripture, reminding myself who God says I am. I put on righteousness by confessing sin and receiving grace. I choose peace over anxiety through prayer. I lift the shield of faith by declaring God's promises over my circumstances. I secure my identity in salvation. I pick up the sword, God's Word, ready to speak it when lies come.

The battle is real. But so is the armor. And today, I'm putting it on.
