Put on the Whole Armor of God.

Theo has a little cup he calls his tickle lightning.

I don't know where it came from or how the rules got decided, but they are very clear. When he is holding that cup, it is full of tickle lightning, and nobody is allowed to tickle him.

That cup is his armor. Nothing can get at him while he's holding it, so he walks in without a second thought.

Paul tells us we've been given the same thing, except ours is real.

Put on the whole armor of God, he writes, so you can stand against everything the devil tries on you.

Not some of it. Not the pieces that seem most useful. All of it.

When I hear the phrase spiritual warfare I picture something dramatic, something out of a movie. But the battle is far more ordinary than that.

It's the small compromise. The thought that sounds like my own voice but isn't. The discouragement that arrives on a perfectly normal day.

The enemy rarely announces himself. He whispers things that sound reasonable and plants doubts that feel logical.

He uses isolation, division, discouragement, comparison, distraction, things I can easily dismiss as just having a bad day or being stressed.

But that's exactly the point. If he can keep me from recognizing the battle, he doesn't have to fight very hard to win.

That is why Paul names every piece.

The belt of truth for when lies sound convincing.

The breastplate of righteousness for when guilt wants to paralyze you.

The shoes of peace for when anxiety wants to drive.

The shield of faith for when doubt starts whispering.

The helmet of salvation for when you can't remember who you are.

The sword of the Spirit for when you need something solid to say back.

And it goes on before anything happens. Not when the pressure arrives, not once you already feel under attack.

Before.

I read Scripture before the day starts, so truth gets in first.

I confess what needs confessing and take the grace instead of carrying the guilt.

I pray instead of turning the problem over and over.

I say God's promises out loud over circumstances that have not budged.

I remind myself who God says I am, so my identity isn't up for debate by lunchtime.

And I keep His Word close enough to speak it the moment the lies start.

Theo is holding a plastic cup, and he is completely sure of himself. You have the whole armor of God.

As you walk into whatever today holds, know that you are not walking into it uncovered. Walk in like it.
